Mechanisms

The four mechanism pages form the analytical backbone of the knowledge base. Each mechanism is a recurring, documented pattern that helps reconstruct one or more of the three analytical theses. Together they cover the interlocking logics of domestic extraction and control, the blurring of state and crime, the externalisation of hybrid tools, and the systematic support of selected authoritarian partners.

A person-centric view alone is insufficient; the mechanisms supply the structural processes that give the entity cards and relationship lists their systemic meaning.

The Four Mechanisms

MechanismPrimary thesis supportCore focus
Kleptocratic ExtractionThesis 1Conversion of public resources and rents into private wealth for a narrow circle under near-total impunity; shift from 1990s oligarchs to contingent kremligarchs.
State–Crime SymbiosisThesis 1 & 2Systematic blurring of boundaries between security services and organised crime: informal taxation, selective impunity, black-cash generation, and operational instrumentalisation.
Hybrid Statecraft ToolsThesis 2 & 3Use of non-military, often deniable instruments (criminal networks, sanctions-evasion channels, PMCs, energy leverage, migration pressure, information operations) as regular means of foreign policy and internal control.
Authoritarian PatronageThesis 3Systematic political, military, economic and intelligence support to selected authoritarian or hybrid regimes (Belarus, Venezuela, Sahel juntas, Iran, DPRK and others); instruments and observed limits.

How Mechanisms Relate to Theses and Entities

  • Thesis 1 (Internal Transformation) is primarily carried by Kleptocratic Extraction and State–Crime Symbiosis, with the domestic face of Authoritarian Patronage.
  • Thesis 2 (International Criminal Linkages) draws on State–Crime Symbiosis and Hybrid Statecraft Tools, plus concrete market-route and network entities.
  • Thesis 3 (Authoritarian Patronage) is carried by the Authoritarian Patronage mechanism and Hybrid Statecraft Tools, illustrated by partner-regime and PMC entity cards.

Each mechanism page contains:

  • a concise summary;
  • detailed source-linked analysis;
  • atomic Knowledge Units that can be cited independently;
  • explicit limitations of the evidence;
  • cross-links to related mechanisms, theses, glossary terms and entity cards.
