Vory-v-zakone

Term (RU): Воры в законе
Schema: DefinedTerm

Working Definition

Historical professional criminal culture and hierarchy originating in the Soviet GULAG system; provided organisational templates, codes and personnel that fed into post-Soviet organised crime groups (OPGs).

Analytical Use on This Site

The term is used historically and structurally. It does not imply that contemporary Russian organised crime remains a pure vory culture; secondary literature (especially Galeotti) documents both continuity of certain forms and profound transformation under post-2000 state dominance. The concept is essential for Category 2 (organised crime) and for the historical trajectory that precedes state–crime symbiosis.
